Current Fishing Report and Fall Fishing Forecast
| Boca Grande Fly Fishing Report |
October 14, 2011 |
Greetings from sunny Boca Grande!
I hope you had a great summer. I am officially back from my adventures in Montana chasing trophy Browns and Rainbows and am in Florida stalking the flats once again. The weather is beautiful, and the fishing has been great. Fall is here, and we all know that with the change in season, the tides are going to stay low, and the sight fishing will be awesome. Who wants to catch more Snook like the ones Gary and Sam caught? I do!!!! Nice fish gentlemen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So take a look at my report below and my fishing forecast for the upcoming months. |

Snook and Redfish Madness
This is the time of year when the days are getting shorter, and the tides are lower than in the spring. The weather down here is perfect. Mid 80s during the day, light winds and a slight chance of rain is the norm. Redfish and Snook are feeding heavily in anticipation of winter. Redfish are tailing in the turtle and eel grass on the right tides. During high sun periods, I am finding them on the white sand or cruising on top over the grass. The Redfish are definitely willing to eat top water slider flies and big bait fish imitations. Two days ago, we were throwing a big top water slider fly with a rattle out ahead of the Reds, and they would wake up on top, chase it down and mow it right beside the boat.
Snook fishing is on the mend from the winter kill that occurred almost two years ago. The Fish and Wildlife Commision has kept the harvesting of snook closed, and as a result, we are seeing a bounce back in the size and numbers. Right now, I am targeting Snook in very shallow water as they are chasing creek chubs in water much too shallow for the average flats boat. We are poling or wading in super shallow water looking for fish busting bait, cruising the bank or laid up. A well presented hot lips gurgler or slider baitfish will result in a ferocious strike.
The Tarpon are still around. We have small Tarpon all the way up to giants right now. Most of the Tarpon are laid up or rolling in the back country, but there is still the occasional shot on the beach for the patient angler. Tarpon fishing is an option until the water temps drop down below 70 degrees for an extended period of time. I love catching laid up Tarpon in the Fall. Grand Slams are a possibility until winter officially sets in. |
